The expansion to the historical Portland Japanese Gardens makes room for thousands of guests, furthering the legacy of beauty and culture the gardens offer. Developing an existing site along with building additions, the work included the Lower Garden and the Sloped Moss Garden leading uphill to a new Garden Village with a tea room, museum space, administration offices, a classroom, gift shop / ticketing, and a maintenance building.
Special Features
- Built for low energy use, the building’s system emphasizes passive ventilation and mechanical systems that blend into the background.
- Radiant floors circulate hot and chilled water for energy efficient heating and cooling.
- An underground geothermal system eliminates unsightly and noisy outside equipment and requires no fossil fuels.
